6 cancer-fighting superfoods

By Leslie Barrie To reduce your risk of cancer, look no further than your fridge. "All the studies on cancer and nutrition point to eating plant-based foods for their phytonutrients and other special compounds," says Richard Béliveau, PhD, chair in the prevention and treatment of cancer at the University of Québec at Montreal and author of Foods to Fight Cancer . Aim for five to nine daily servings of all kinds of fruits and vegetables—especially these six superstars.   Photo Credit: GETTY IMAGES Broccoli All cruciferous veggies (think cauliflower, cabbage, kale) contain cancer-fighting properties, but broccoli is the only one with a sizable amount of sulforaphane, a particularly potent compound that boosts the body's protective enzymes and flushes out cancer-causing chemicals, says Jed Fahey, ScD. A recent University of Michigan study on mice found that sulforaphane also targets cancer stem cells—those that aid in tumor growth. Helps fight: breast, liver, l...

Poverty breeds new generation of Filipino rebels

MOUNT DIWATA, Philippines – Too poor to afford school beyond fourth grade in the southern Philippines, 19-year-old Johnny Buyo walked away from home six months ago to join the communist rebellion — one of Asia's longest-running. He was handed a rusty M16 rifle, which he vowed to keep for life. The teenager recently gathered with an older generation of battle-hardened veterans in their 60s for a celebration marking the 42nd anniversary of the Communist Party of the Philippines, whose insurgency withstood decades of crackdown by five Philippine presidents. "It's scary at first but later, you gain confidence when you think that you're fighting for the people," said Buyo, the rifle slung on his tiny frame. Amid a Christmas cease-fire and looming peace talks with President Benigno Aquino III's new government, about 80 Maoist guerrillas armed with rifles and grenade launchers marched in a remote rice-farming village in the foothills of Mount Diwata i...

Lee has sharpened his language against the North after coming under pressure because of a perceived weak response to two North Korean attacks this year that raised tension on the peninsula to the highest since the 1950-53 Korean War . The clashes have led some analysts to say the chance of a wider conflict is greater than ever. In the latest rhetorical sparring, the North last week threatened a nuclear "sacred war" and Lee vowed "a merciless cou...

Pacquiao top story in boxing

Francis T.J. Ochoa First Posted 01:11:11 27/12/2010 Photo Credit: Inquirer Sports   Popular sports magazine and website Sports Illustrated named the exploits of Manny Pacquiao as the biggest boxing story for 2010, a columnist for the online edition posted recently.   “He’s won major sanctioning-body titles in eight different weight classes, nearly half of the sport’s 17 divisions,” wrote Bryan Armen Graham on SI’s Inside Boxing. “He was the subject of a 60 Minutes profile in November, less than 12 months after being named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people.” Pacquiao fought twice this year, opening up 2010 by dominating Joshua Clottey at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas before annexing the WBC super welterweight crown with a 12-round annihilation of Mexican Antonio Margarito. The victory over Margarito came almost a year after Pacquiao stopped Miguel Cotto in the 12th round of their WBO welterweight title, giving the Filipino ring icon an...

Season's Gripings: Impromptu Vacations Vex Filipinos

Manila Extends Tradition of Last-Minute Long Weekends, but President and Businesses Ask If 'Holiday Economics' Pencils Out By JAMES HOOKWAY  ORIGINAL POST SOURCE:  http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704278404576037631456687352.html   MANILA—With less than two weeks left before Christmas this year, the Philippine government unveiled a holiday gift to its people: Friday would be day off to mark Christmas Eve, and a second public holiday, in honor of a national martyr, would be observed on Monday, Dec. 27. The result was a windfall four-day weekend. But instead of invoking cheer, such surprises are increasingly being met with grumbles from Philippine business leaders, its president and even some of its heavily vacationed workers. China clarifies position on N. Korea's nuclear policy

ORIGINAL POST SOURCE: http://english.yonhapnews.co.kr/national/2010/12/24/54/0301000000AEN20101224005800315F.HTML SEOUL, Dec. 24 (Yonhap) -- China told South Korea Friday that North Korea's right to peaceful use of nuclear power is possible only when Pyongyang abides by international denuclearization obligations, a government official said.    China conveyed the position to Seoul through a diplomatic channel, clarifying an earlier comment by its foreign ministry spokesperson that has raised speculation that Beijing might be trying to defend North Korea's uranium enrichment program, according to the official.    On Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said that the North "has the right to use nuclear power for peaceful purposes, but also at the same time must allow IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) inspectors in."    North Korea claims its uranium enrichment program is for peaceful purposes. Dudley's Career High Can't Help Suns Overcome Heat

By Stefan Swiat , Suns.com Posted: Dec. 23, 2010 ORIGINAL POST SOURCE:   http://www.nba.com/suns/news/newsroom_101223.html  When the Suns found out that Heat guard Dwyane Wade wasn’t playing Thursday, they must’ve thought that their holiday wishes were answered. After leaping out to an early 11-point lead in the first quarter, they may have been certain of it. However, Miami would play the role of the Grinch, reeling off a 17-3 run that would catapault the Heat into the lead early in the second period. From that point on, Miami would never look back or trail again, dealing the Suns a 95-83 home loss and spoiling what was a festive atmosphere inside of US Airways Center. “Early in the game we really had a chance to be up big but before you know it, we were down going into halftime,” Suns guard Steve Nash said. “They were doubling me so guys were wide-open but we only shot 40 percent. We had good looks so if we shot what we normally shoot (48, 49, 50 percent)...

Young Koreans head to military amid tensions

By Nemo Kim , For CNN December 24, 2010 -- Updated 0411 GMT (1211 HKT)       Seoul, South Korea (CNN) -- Weeks after North Korea's attack on Yeonpyeong Island, the mood is still tense on the streets of Seoul, especially following the largest ever winter live-fire drill and civil defense exercise. This sense of apprehension was clear on university campuses, with many young men worried about the prospect of an outright war. That's because many college students are due to start their military service after this semester and also because the two soldiers killed on Yeonpyeong Island last month were their age, 19 and 21. "The two marines who died on Yeonpyeong were my age and I might be a victim, too. That makes me anxious. My mom's worried these days," said Jaehwan Lee, a 19-year-old English literature major who is due to begin his military duty once the semester is over. South Korea is technically still at war with its communist neighbor. The 1...

Japan bio-scientists produce 'singing mouse'

Agence France-Presse   TOKYO--Japanese scientists said Tuesday they had produced a mouse that tweets like a bird in a genetically engineered "evolution" which they hope will shed light on the origins of human language. A team of researchers at the University of Osaka created the animal in their "Evolved Mouse Project", in which they use genetically modified mice that are prone to miscopying DNA and thus to mutations. "Mutations are the driving force of evolution. We have cross-bred the genetically modified mice for generations to see what would happen," lead researcher Arikuni Uchimura told AFP. "We checked the newly born mice one by one... One day we found a mouse that was singing like a bird," he said, noting that the "singing mouse" was born by chance but that the trait will be passed on to future generations. "I was surprised because I had been expecting mice that are different in physical shape," he sai...
